Wailing and Gnashing of Teeth

When I heard about Bob's firing yesterday and the subsequent demise of the radio show, all I could do was shrug my shoulders, make some phone calls and hope for the best. But in the past 24 hours I have received about a dozen e-mails from people whose e-mails I have answered over the years asking what happened and, more importantly, what's going to happen now.

Of course, I don't have an answer. Our team will continue in some form, probably just not on the radio. We have a newsletter with almost 3,000 subscribers and that will continue (if you don't subscribe and you want to, let me know and I'll get it out to you; it's free and we DO NOT sell or give out your e-mail address). Despite my frustrations with some of my fellow team members, the experience has been a positive one.

I find it touching that people actually made it a point to listen to our show. I guess I always thought that most of our listeners probably kept the station on all day anyway or just caught the show when they were in their car. Now, I realize that we were a part of people's lives. Now, without warning, we're not. Sad.

Have you given any thought to approaching Louisville public radio with the idea of doing the same kind of thing for them that you did with WHAS? The're always harping about how hot they are for locally produced programming. Maybe something like Home Grown, Bob Hill and jeneen Wiche' gardening show as a template. Or perhaps local cable access; go on television! I think everyone here would agree that Matt is much more photo-friendly than Sokolar ever thought about being.

Posted by: Jerry at April 22, 2004 12:23 PM

Jerry brings up a good point. Bob was an asshole, and not very good at hosting the show. Anyone can replace him and do a better job. I hope the team is able to get back on the radio, or carry the show to a larger audience in some form.

Posted by: Mike at April 22, 2004 12:42 PM

Two of the guys from our show actually did two demo hours of a computer help show. Problem is that I wasn't on the "invited participants" list for reasons I won't go into here. I have thought about approaching them myself without those guys, but I'm not sure I have an in with anyone.

Posted by: Matt at April 22, 2004 02:06 PM

Well to start with you could email Terry Rensel; trensel@wpfl.org He's the program director at WFPL and tell him what you got. Sounds like you guys had a good show going on at WHAS, you never know with your flair for words and shameless self promotion (:O) you just might get a foot in the door. Your not exactly a beginner at radio. Car Talk got started with no less of a humble beginning and those guys are gazzilionaires now. If you do happen to get a setdown with Rensel, please don't wear one of those damn Limbaugh ties. Trust me on this one.

Posted by: Jerry at April 22, 2004 09:15 PM

I should've mentioned that the guys who did the demo show did so on WFPL, so I could be stepping on toes if I went to NPR about this now. I don't expect an invitation from either of the guys; one is a shameless self-promoter (not all bad) and the other is a creepy flake.

I have another avenue to explore; stay tuned ;-)

Posted by: Matt at April 22, 2004 09:35 PM

I was afraid that that is what had happened. That those guys had gone to FPL. It sounds like a great idea-a radio show for PC's enthusiasts- and FPL could help someone do it up right. Think TV would be as good a venue; I really can't decide if it would or not?

Evolution is as much a fact as the earth turning on its axis and going around
the sun. At one time this was called the Copernican theory; but, when
evidence for a theory becomes so overwhelming that no informed person
can doubt it, it is customary for scientists to call it a fact. That all

Peers's Law:
The solution to a problem changes the nature of the problem.
buy cialis cheap cialisOpen Source Beer Revolution

Yesterday, Red Hat introduced an 'open source' beer called Red Brew. The
recipes for making the beer are available for free over the Net, and
microbrewery kits are available at low cost from Red Hat. Says a Red Hat
spokesman, "With the proliferation of free (open source) software, it was only
a matter of time before open source beer became reality. After all, the only
thing hackers like more than free software is free beer!"

Following the Red Hat annoucement, other companies are racing to launch their
own beer 'distribution'. Caldera is developing an OpenBrew beer. Meanwhile,
Patrick Volkerding is working on a SlackBeer distribution, and DebianBrew is
expected soon.

Traditional breweries and beer distributors are not thrilled about open source
beer. "This is ludicrous! People want beer that comes from time-tested, secret
recipes -- not beer from recipes invented overnight! Open source is a fad," a
spokesman for Buddwizzer Beer, Inc. said. In addition, other beverage
distributors are nervous. "First open source beer, and soon open source soft
drinks! Before we know it, we'll have RedCoke and SlackPepsi! This open source
plague must be stopped before it eats into our bottom line! Don't quote me on
that last sentence," the CEO of Croak-a-Cola said.
