Dr. Condeleeza Rice's confirmation hearing before the Senate began yesterday. Most of you are probably aware of her exchange with Senator Babs Boxer of California, so I'm not going to repeat it here. The first part of the exchange is here.
Senator Boxer is aware, no doubt, of Dr. Rice's viability as a Presidential candidate in 2008; thus her disgraceful display. Rice will be confirmed, but it is important for the Dems to have this record on file, especially when it comes to Iraq. Those of you who consider yourself Democrats need to ask yourselves if Boxer represents what you want your party to be: sniveling, exaggerating (or lying, depending on who you ask) and weak-willed. If you want to have any chance of regaining the White House or the Congress, you would be well-served by marginalizing the Boxers of your world.
I feel particularly defensive about Dr. Rice because I like her so much. My thoughts about her can be summed up in something Cal Thomas wrote about her two years ago: "While her peers were singing 'We Shall Overcome', Condi just went out and did it." I don't think I'm overreaching when I say that she could be the next President---she already has my vote.
Posted by Matthew at January 19, 2005 07:26 AMLet's say, just for the sake of arguement, that Dr. Rice were to be voted President. She'd last about a week.
There is no way this country will stand to have a woman for President, or a black. And guess what? She's both of those!
In all honesty, she would have to be the biggest fool alive to think that would be a good move for her. She would be assinated in less than a week, but most likely, before she was inaugurated.
Posted by: troy at January 19, 2005 09:37 AMI give the American people more credit than that, Troy. The only people who are down on her now are those from the "tolerant" Left, and they're all skeeeered of guns, aren't they?
There will always be fringe racists, but it's not 1950 anymore; they're not organized.
Posted by: Matt at January 19, 2005 10:35 AMI agree with Matt. Besides the Secret Service is much smarter now. They will not let her drive around Dallas in a connvertible.
Posted by: Sly at January 19, 2005 02:12 PMI guess you both live too close to a larger city to understand that racism is alive and well in redneck America. Does anyone happen to remember that they now have "hate" crime? When did that designation come about... 1950?
And when you drive around at night in places where burning crosses are visible in plain sight, you'll realize we're not as far along in the battle against racism as you might want to believe. Just because affirmative action exists, just because we have BET, doesn't mean that there are not people who will do whatever it takes to keep (a) a woman, or (b) a minority out of the White House.
Posted by: troy at January 19, 2005 03:44 PMLying, sinveling, exaggerating ...
I thought you were talking about Don Rumsfeld there for a second...
:-p
This whole WMD thing has been done to death. It's time (for the Dems and everyone else) to let it go. The people who (in my mind) need to be held accountable for this mess, are never going to be. To the victor go the spoils. Let's just do what we have to do, as quickly as we can, and get our troops the hell outta there.
At the same time I am also tired of the "We know he used WMDs before" crap. Ya, we knew that in 1984 when Saddam was our pal. And in 1988 when he gassed the Kurds. It's not like it happened yesterday and was suddenly some imminent threat. It's a very weak crutch to lean on IMO and only fools the naive.

Posted by: Hash at January 19, 2005 07:02 PMBTW,
I would love to see Dr. Rice run for president.
Err... Republican, Black, Minority, Woman. Damn.. there go all our talking points !.
The democrats would have no card left to play. LOL.

Posted by: Hash at January 19, 2005 07:07 PMThere is plenty of racism in the city and the country. I am just saying the racists can't take out a the President of the United States of America. Hell you can barely find one to proudly wear a pillow case on their head and take a photo.
Posted by: Sly at January 19, 2005 10:37 PMI somewhat agree with you Hash EVERYONE Bill Clinton, John Kerry, George Bush and countless other thought Sadam had WMD's! Why? Bad intel! John Kerry acts like since 1990 He and all the Democrats have been saying there are no WMD's. We had bad intel. Is Iraq better off without Sadam. IMO I think so. Would I have gone to war to oust him? Most likely not. Would I have agreed with sending in some SPECWAR teams to drop him and his crew absolutely. Better yet I am all for allowing Isreal off their leash and handle up on their business. Dr. Rice admitted that "they" had made mistakes. Hell that wasn't good enough. It is better than some of the in your face flat out lies told by some of the democrats in past admins. I mean I did not have sexual relations with that woman. You cant mistake whether or not your %!#* was in someone's mouth. You can't make a mistake on where you were putting your cigars. You don't say I own several SUV's and then say my family owns several SUV's. There is a difference in making a mistake and lying when you get caught. To be honest on Bill Clinton in the big picture I am not really pissed he cheated on his old lady. I admire somethings about JFK. Cheating wasn't one of them...but for god's sakes if you are going to cheat make sure you're moving up the ladder. I think Bill would have banged Star Jones and Roseanne if he had the opportunity.
Posted by: Sly at January 20, 2005 11:45 PMAye Sly,
I have never defended Billy C on his lies. In fact on this very blog months ago, I stated the "I did not have sexual relations with...." as a perfect example of a lie. But one has to remember, a Lie is a Lie, but the consequences can be far different. No one DIED because Clinton got a blowjob.
Like I said before. The people who (in my mind) need to be held accountable for this mess, are never going to be. They wanted Saddam gone, and 9/11 was the excuse. Rhetoric turned to policy, policy directed intel (not the other way around), and the lies followed. To present false information with the intent to deceive is in my book a lie. Coming back later with the Reaganesque "Mistakes were made" or "bad intel" doesn't fly well with me when thousands of our troops are dead.
I could give a flying fark about John Kerry or Michael Moore or Rush Limbaugh or what they say. But I do care about the integrity of the office of the President of the United States. I strongly felt that Bill Clinton should have resigned for the same reason. When MY President, or members of his staff stand up on TV and tell me something, I need to be able to believe them. Especially when my friends or family members have to go to war. What the President says, should be to borrow a phrase "unimpeachable". Or shamelessly borrowing from history - the word of the President should be good enough.
Unfortunately, the words of this adminstration will now never be good enough for me. I am sorry, but I will never believe George W Bush or Don Rumsfeld ever again.
