CNN's Foot-In-Mouth Problem
CNN's Chief News Executive, Eason Jordan, seems to have caused quite a stir at the World Economic Forum. According to Forumblog.org:
Eason Jordan asserted that he knew of 12 journalists who had not only been killed by US troops in Iraq, but they had in fact been targeted. He repeated the assertion a few times, which seemed to win favor in parts of the audience (the anti-US crowd) and cause great strain on others.
Jordan later did some back-pedaling when challenged, which makes one wonder if his comments were just thrown out there for consumption by the anti-American crowd. If so, it wouldn't be the first time that CNN has used a foundation of deceit to either make or get a story.
Some of you may recall the story that broke soon after the fall of Baghdad. The same Eason Jordan stated that the CNN office in Baghdad had learned about atrocities committed by Saddam and his henchmen but did not report them. The excuse was that they wanted to protect the lives of Iraqis on the CNN payroll. Of course, honest journalists were left wondering if the real reason for their integrity-challenging omissions was to maintain access in Iraq. Either way, it was a serious breach of journalistic ethics.
CNN's problem is that it needs (or wants) to serve different masters all over the world. In some places, such as pre-war Iraq, this required a surrender of decency and honesty. What about their people in a place like China? Or Russia? How far is a network like CNN willing to go to maintain a goldmine of access?
Ethics aside, Jordan felt the need to go to a foreign nation and slander US troops and their command structure. If journalists really had been targeted, it would be the biggest story of the war. The fact that you're just now hearing about it tells us that it never happened. But windbags such as Jordan see themselves as above reproach, wrapped in the cloak of the sainted journalist, even as the ship of CNN sinks bow first into the sea of low ratings.
And the liberals wonder about the success of Fox News.
