The Democrats are confident that they will win back the House of Representatives this November. I believe it's not only possible, but very likely if the Republican Party doesn't start getting aggressive. A Democratic House, Senate or both would, I believe, be the worst thing that has happened to this country politically in a generation.
There are several reasons why I believe this to be true. First, there's Nancy Pilosi. Chances are high that she will be the House Majority Leader if the Dems win big in November since she is now the Minority Leader. If you've ever heard her speak, you know why I'm worried. Her entire career seems to be based on attacks and tin-foil hat theories about Republicans. I have never heard her say anything of substance that was not an attack or a weird assumption.
Second, there is the war. The American voting public generally sees Republicans as strong on national defense and Democrats as weak. Perception is reality in politics, but this time the perception is dead on. The next decade is going to present us with many overseas challenges and I don't see the likes of Teddy Kennedy or Dick Durbin being helpful.
Finally, there is Hillary Clinton. If the Republicans don't run an incredibly likeable candidate in two years, it is very possible that Sen. Clinton will become President. Imagine a Democratic Congress and a Democrat in the White House with a Socialist agenda; it's a nightmare scenario. Imagine federalized health care for starters.
I know some conservatives who almost want a big Republican loss in November so as to remind them of who their base is and what they expect. While I understand that sentiment, I'm not willing to risk the damage The Party Without A Plan could do in 2 or 4 years.

I just can't see us voting a woman into the office of the President. Sorry, we're just not that progressive. You want to keep a Republican in office, just run someone who is not a hardened criminal, and you'll be fine.
As good as people like Colin Powell, or Hillary may be, or may not be, anyway, the American public is not ready to hand the White House over to a minority; women, the African-American, the Indian, or a Hispanic. Doesn't mean anything other than we just aren't ready for that. Something safe exists in consistency, maybe that's all it is.

1994 - Republican Contract with America
....to bring to the House a new majority that will transform the way Congress works. That historic change would be the end of government that is too big, too intrusive, and too easy with the public's money.
....To restore accountability to Congress. To end its cycle of scandal and disgrace. To make us all proud again of the way free people govern themselves.
So how's that Party WITH a plan doing on the above items after 11 years in power? (insert cricket chirps here)
"Imagine a Democratic Congress and a Democrat in the White House with a Socialist agenda; it's a nightmare scenario".
As compared to what? A bigger, more intrusive govt. today than any we have seen in American history - with ZERO ethics - MIRED in financial scandal - with a $9 TRILLION debt to boot and still spending like an out of control teenager with an unlimited VISA card.
And EVERYTHING (so I have heard) is either Bill Clinton's fault or can be attributed to the standard excuse of 9/11.
"A Democratic House, Senate or both would, I believe, be the worst thing that has happened to this country politically in a generation."
Once again, as compared to what? Based on the state of the nation today compared to where we were prior to the Republicans coming to power - that statement is almost laughable.

The GOP is worried about losing both houses of Congress this year and for good reason. The "DO Nothing Congress" of 2006 is only rivaled by the "Do Nothing Congress" of 1948. The fact alone that this Congress has had so much liesure time this year is not enough for them to lose the majority. The fact that they have and will literally do nothing this year is what will lose it for them. Instead of tackling tough issues like illegal immigration, price gougeing and emergency preparedness they decided to take on tort reform and plan on facing tougher issues like flag burning and gay marriage.
Having Nancy Pelosi as Majority Leader is bad opposed to having ethically challenged Majority Leaders like Delay and Boehner? I will take the "tin-foil hat" lady lady any day over these two criminals. At least she would conduct oversight hearings on the current Bush Administration.
You are spot on about perception being reality in politics. Illegal immigrants are pouring over our border, air cargo is not being screened, one of our cities drowned, and the suggested fixes from the 9-11 panel were never implimented. The only perception that Americans have about the GOP controlled Congress is that they care more about corporate bottom lines and profit margins than they care about our security.
You will never see Hillary run as the Democratic Nominee and not only because of her gender but because Democrats know she could never win. Hillary as the Democratic Nominee would be a GOP wet dream. Karl Rove would gleefully buy the biggest bottle of jergins and pleasure himself for days over pictures of the Kennedy family if that were to happen. Don't count on it. Most Democrats know that there is too much on the line if they allowed another four years of this disasterous Republican agenda. Expect Al Gore back as the Democrat Nominee. If he continues to find his voice like he has.
Face it Matt, the Republican house of cards built on lies and deception is falling. It isn't falling because of traditional Republican values but because your party has been hijacked by christian zealots and corporate idealogues.
