Spicolli Speaks, World Listens

Sean Penn called President Bush "a Beelzebub...and a dumb one" during the Toronto Film Festival this week. Not to quibble with Mr. Penn and his big, scary brain, but isn't Beelzebub another name for Satan? I know that in Paradise Lost , Beelzebub was actually Satan's right-hand man, sort of the Executive Officer of Hell. So calling someone "a" Beelzebub doesn't make sense, does it? Or am I just thinking too hard about it?

Yeah, well, you know...he's not a very good actor, either.

I haven't read much about Kevin Costner in a long time, but I like the fact that, regardless of his political leanings, he at least respects the fact that the man in the White House is a human being with a family. Good on ya, Mr. Costner.

Now please take Sean out back and give him some public speaking lessons.

Like Costner is such a wonderful actor. Has he made a movie since Waterworld? And who gives a shit what any of these celebrities think?

Waterworld was deeeep, man. Actually, it blew goats.

I don't know about the grammatical correctness of his statement, but it is at least a fairly common usage when comparing two people, though it is usually preceeded by an adjective and the word "like".

For example, I could say "Matt is like a modern Plato, enlightnening the masses"; if I shortened that to "Matt, a modern Plato, enlightened the masses last Tuesday", then the meaning would not be lost.

Of course, without the adjective, it sounds kind of silly: "Matt, a Plato, enlightened my brother". Thus, he should have included the adjective in order to be correct. Maybe he could have used one of the following:

"[Bush] is a cuddly Beelzebub"
"[Bush] is a dumb Beelzebub" (going for his original sentiment)
"[Bush] is a Lincolnish Beelzebub"

or maybe

"[Bush] hurt my feelings"

Heh.

Ba'al Zevuv is Hebrew and means "lord of the flies".

Ba'al (bet ayin lamed) is "lord" or "master" or "husband" (in modern Hebrew) and used to be an ancient semitic god (name also appears in "Hannibal" i.e. "Hanniba'al").

Zevuv or Zebub (zayin, bet, vav, bet, "B" is pronounced "V" at the end of words and sometimes in the middle) means "fly" or "flies".
